Round 2: The Pats, Moss, Yau Man, and Much Much More!

Hey People,

Here is this week’s edition. First I want to thank you for all the support. I was surprised on how many people read last week’s post. Some of the comments were great, so I’ll try to deliver another good posting. To prevent this from getting too long, this week let’s just jump right into my list of The Ten Things You Should Know, That I Already Know.

  1. I know that the New England Patriots are overrated! Come on people… all this hype?!?! Ok, ok… I will admit they probably deserve to be the favorites to win it all this year, but some of you just want to hand them the damn trophy already. They have made some major additions. I think the biggest is the slightly overrated Adalius Thomas (overrated because he is the product of an excellent system), but he is a significant upgrade to NE’s linebacking corp. They also revamped their receiving corp by adding Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth, and Randy Moss. My opinion is that New England should have just paid their OWN players, keeping the guys that won them three Superbowls in four years. It will probably take time for the chemistry to come together with this new group, and watch out for the inevitable Randy Moss drama. However if any team can handle a prima donna it is the Pats. I remember laughing as the Patriots went on to win the Superbowl as their number one receiver Terry Glenn was sitting at home suspended. However, when is the last time the preseason favorites won the Superbowl anyways? Remember Carolina last year? Moreover, the Pats are one injury away from not even making the playoffs… let’s play out the season before we hand them the trophy.
  2. I know Randy Moss NEVER deserves to be put in the Hall of Fame. I’ll try to keep this one short. All I hear is how Moss is going to resurrect his career in New England and solidify his spot in Canton. I agree with Sports Illustrated’s Dr. Z …. Moss is a dog. Too many guys gave it their all on every snap of every game of every season of their entire careers and never came close to the Hall. Even during his prime years Moss admitted to taking plays off, and then he took two years off as he contributed to dragging the Raiders down into the cellar. I do not care if he catches 30 touchdown passes next year. He is a dog, and doesn’t deserve that honor.
  3. I know Yau Man deserved the million dollars on Survivor. Since I am 1/8 Filipino I am always partial to my fellow Asians, but Yau was undeniably awesome all season long. Remember when he was the only one that could open the wooden box, or how he dominated the challenges, or found the immunity idols and played it at the perfect moment, and then he came up with that awesome deal to swap Dreamz a truck for the immunity idol. Unfortunately Dreamz couldn’t keep his word costing Yau a million bucks.
  4. I know the Arizona Cardinals will have a winning season this year…. or next. If the over/under on the Cards is 6 wins, I’ll take the over. I expect them to win 7 games this year, and 9 the next. I like the strides that ownership is making. It all started with paying for a coach (even though Denny Green didn’t work out), but adding Edge, and drafting Leinart to pass to their solid set of receivers were very good moves. They are an offensive line away from being a winning team. Levi Brown was a reach, but met a major need. And since the Steelers are refusing to offer their all-pro guard (Alan Faneca) top-ten money, my guess is that he will be a Cardinal before the first week of free agency ends next year.
  5. I know that the general manager of the Chargers A.J. Smith gets a free pass. Being here in San Diego, I hear a lot of people are upset with the Chargers draft. I know they passed on a few highly rated receivers and surprised a lot of people by taking Craig Davis and then they traded away the rest of their draft for the safety Eric Weddle, but come on… if you trust any G.M. it has to be Smith. A.J. was in the Bills front office during their glory years, and in the Chargers front office when they traded the right to draft Vick for LT and Brees. A.J. also engineered the Eli for Rivers, Luis Castillo, and Shawne Merriman trade. One of the best draft trades EVER. He also discovered all pro tight end Antonio Gates. This guy rocks, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Davis and Weddle became perennial pro-bowlers.
  6. I know the Jamaican Red Stripe guy is freaking HILARIOUS! Boo large headed friend. Hooray Beer!
  7. I know Ricky Williams loves smoking weed. Ricky, Ricky, Ricky… what the hell are you doing?!?! I am not going to bag on him too much, because I believe his social-anxiety disorder is severely debilitating and has already ruined his career. This guy has sooooooo much talent, but can’t put down the bong-pipe. I think if he ever makes it back to the NFL he needs to have one press conference where he tells the media he can’t overcome this disorder that has forced him to self-medicate, and until he can find a legal alternative he isn’t going to talk to the press EVER. Let his play on the field speak for him. And if he does this, I think the media should respect this and leave him alone.
  8. I know that Roger Clemens will save the Yankees’ season. I hate the evil empire as much as the next guy, and maybe I am biased because the computer drafted Clemens for me in both my fantasy baseball leagues, but Clemens will be good. Last year he had the lowest ERA in the league the second half of the season. All those years of using HGH are really paying off now. I read somewhere it breaks down to him making $100 a minute. Seriously?! Seriously?!?! $100 a minute?!!!? David Junior is going to have a baseball in his hand as soon as he pops out. Anyways, with the lineup NY puts on the field, the wins should just roll on in. I DO hate the Yankees… so hopefully I am wrong (not likely though). Also did anyone notice how his training is suddenly going better than expected so he will be back at the end of May against Toronto, instead of the beginning of June against the BoSox? That would have been a circus. A debut against Dice-K would have been a must-watch.
  9. I know that JaMarcus Russell will be the last first-round draft pick to sign. There is a very good possibility that playing in Oakland will ruin any shot he had at having a successful NFL career, so he needs to get as much money as he can up-front. I also expect a long hold out from Gaines Adams, Adrian Peterson, and Brady Quinn. For some reason I experienced a small sense of joy every time a team passed on Quinn. He was extremely overrated and I am going to get pissed when he tries to demand more money than he and his draft spot deserves.
  10. I know that both Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudemire deserved to be suspended. I saved this one for last to make sure all my AZ friends read the entire blog. A rule is a rule. It really sucks, and it ended up costing the Suns game 5, but the NBA really had no choice. What was Amare thinking?!?! He had to force his way around an assistant coach and made his way 20 feet down the court! If the fracas had lasted five seconds longer he would have been in the middle of it all escalating any confrontations. I like Amare but at times he can be really immature as evidenced by this incident AND for the reason he was on the bench… he should have never picked up that fifth foul and maybe he would have been allowed to play defense when it was all on the line. Also don’t give me the bull about Tim Duncan being on the court. He took two steps onto the court when there was hardly anything going on. He wasn’t going to try to run in and get in the middle of things like Amare was trying to do.

Ok folks, that’s all for now. I will post again early next week. I am already working on some things. I am considering making a list of the top ten QB’s in the NFL, the ten QB’s on the hot seat, and maybe in the next couple of posts a Q&A session. Keep the comments and questions rolling in, and make sure you subscribe to my blog so you can get the new editions hot off the press!

First things first: I'm off to watch the Chivas v America game! Once that's over (including the postgame) you'll get my comments.

¡¡Arriba las Chivas!!

Ok, some comments:

I've always pondered what it takes (or what it should take) to get into a "hall of fame". Let's discuss this (by the way, I'd love to hear Dave's take on this ).

Before I begin, let me say that I am no expert in US sports like baseball and USHF and my exposure to the culture surrounding these events, especially historically is very limited.

Having made this caveat, it seems to me that being voted into a hall of fame should depend on the following, in decending order of importance:

1. The level at which you played the game over the course of your career. All stats, circumstances, and intangibles should be taken into account.

2. Records you set while playing the game.

3. The level at which you excelled at some other aspect of the game besides playing (coaching, owning, broadcasting, etc)

4. Other historical, memorable, or even infamous events that you were involved with (the Carlton Fisk thing, the Bears' comeback vs AZ last year, the Ice Bowl)

Based on my little formula, one must conclude that when all is said and done IF Randy's numbers and/or achievements hold up, he should be in the USHF Hall of Fame no matter how big of a jerk, bastard, or lazy slob he is/was. As long as he's good enough to be in a uniform, play the game, and get the right numbers, that should be enough to get him in... unless he gambles.

Moving on: I agree with your take on AJ. He gets all the slack he wants until he does a couple of things wrong. Complaining about his moves is stupid.

Roger Clemens is a complete bastard and should fit right in with the Yankees. Curse of Dan Quayle on all of them.

Brady Quinn deserves what he got for going to that overhyped, middle of nowhere college. The real Irish American university is Boston College.

Amen.

Okay so some people in one of my myspace groups were hating on my blog.

They thought Moss has already earned a place in the HOF, and that Roger Clemens never used HGH and would not save the Yankees... so I had to respond... here were my long winded responses.

Well thank you all for the constructive criticism. I'll keep your suggestions in mind for my next posting.

First off regarding Moss records aren't everything And obviously character does matter as evidence by the Hall waiting three years to induct Michael Irvin (and he had first ballot numbers). Irvin had three rings and it took him three years? How many rings does Moss have? So please, go ahead and tell me why Moss deserves to be put in the Hall? Because he led the leagues in touchdowns for a couple seasons? If records were everything there wouldn't be talk that Terrell Davis won't make the Hall and he had a six year span second-to-none. So if Terrell Davis who was a 6th round draft pick who rushed for 1000 yards as a rookie, 2 time Superbowl Champion, 1 time Superbowl MVP, 2000 yard rusher in one season AND league MVP, might not make the hall, how the hell is Moss going to make the hall? Ok so I know what you are going to say... so I'll beat you to the punch, yes Moss is a five-time probowler, and yes he does have the 5th most receiving touchdowns in NFL history, but this is the same guy that publicly said the Marshall Plane crash "wasn't nothing big", tried to run over a police officer, left the field during a game, mooned an opposing team's fans, admitted to drug use, and admitted to taking not only plays off, but two entire seasons off. America's sports writers determine who gets in, and their subjectivity is blatant. Moss might get in, but he doesn't deserve it, and it definitely is not a done deal.

Regarding Roger Clemens, with Fans like you God, the Rocket definitely doesn't need enemies. Yes you did miss something... My HGH comment was in reference of Jason Grimsley (wikipedia him if you need to) confessing to the FBI that Roger uses HGH. Grimsley claims he got his performance enhancers from the same trainer that Roger uses. Usually people don't name others as HGH users with absolutely no basis for the accusation. Also you claim that Roger will have 13 wins and an ERA around four. I could only be so lucky. Those are awesome freaking numbers! 13 wins in half a season would be 26 in a full season!!!! Please god please let it be so... fantasy baseball championships will be rolling in. Also regarding his ERA. Clemens will only pitch 5-6 innings a start. So that translates into 3 earned runs a game. Have you seen the Yankees line up???? You think they can't score more than three runs a game?!?! They are already averaging 5.4 runs a game and Matsui has missed time and Cano is slumping. An ERA around 4 will definitely get the job done. With his 13 wins, and the mental boost he will provide.... yes he will save the Yankees.

I went on to say...

Ok so I followed your advice and I did check the numbers. They have played 40 games so far. They are 18-22. They are averaging 5.44 runs a game, and they have scored less than 3 runs in a loss only FIVE times this season and that is including tonights loss. Also I will concede he will not play only half a season. He is on track to come in around their 51-ish game... So two-thirds of a season. So maybe not on track for 26 wins, but maybe 19 or 20... which is SOLID. Also you are right, their bull-pen is weak. But contributing to that is their need to use relief pitchers in a starters role. Their starting rotation has been in shambles, but Clemens will come in and anchor the rotation, sending some of the shmucks they've been starting back to the bull-pen where they belong.

Finally, they don't need to take down the Red Sox to save their season. They can also get in by winning the wild card. But I remember the Sox HUGE 2nd half collapse last year, so nothing is impossible.

WOW THAT WAS LONG!

I still hate Tedy Bruschi, fuck the Pats. Randy Moss is going to get into the Hall of Fall, the people who put it all on the field every down were not that great to begin with. When people sit back and pose the question "Who are the best receivers of all time?" the names of those poor souls who left it all on the field and still sucked never come up. Who the fuck watches Survivor anymore? Seriously. The Cards will have a winning season next year, no doubt. I did say the same thing last year, but damn it, they are starting out with Leinart instead of jumping in when Warner was going to inevitably fuck up. I hope they can add Alan Faneca, but we shall see. The Chargers shouldn't be too worried about the draft, they have a solid team and it won't have much impact on them this year. Haha, hilarious clip BOO large headed friend. His head is crazy big, gonna go cry himself to sleep on his huge pillow. Ricky Williams won't have a career in the NFL any longer. He had his second and third shot already and there is no way Goodell will allow someone who can't stop burning his lips on the pipe to rejoin a league he is trying desperately to police. Fuck the Yankees, Clemens may add 8-10 wins but that won't be enough to "save" them, Go BoSox! I hope Russell does hold out, boo Raiders, BOO! Gaines may holdout, but doubtful, Peterson probably won't either, and Quinn definitely won't holdout, he will be trying to make an immediate impact to show up all the teams that passed on him. Let's not forget, FUCK THE SPURS. I fucking hate them with a passion and now even more, Amare and Diaw should not have been suspended in the fuckin playoffs. If anything, they should have suspended them next season, for however many games they want. That was such a bullshit way to win the series. How many times did Nash get cheap shotted during that series by let's see... half the fucking Spurs team and only the blatantly obvious body check from the 10th man drew a suspension. Bowen kneed him in the balls for Christ's sake, how is that a natural move setting up for a jump shot? Fuck Bowen, I hope he gets syphilis...from Ginobili. I'm out

Roger Clemens is one of the things I should know about the NFL that you already know? Eh, you're probably right. He keeps packing on the pounds and can't seem to hang up his shoes. I expect to see him gear up in the second arena football league within the next 10 years.

As for Amare, Diaw and the Suns, I'm with you in saying the suspensions were rightfully handed down. But the bigger issue--the one the NBA can't seem to get--is that which Bill Simmons addressed in a column last week. What is the purpose of these rules? Well, I'd wager it's to prevent escalation of a dispute. Sure, having the bench rule seems like it'll serve that purpose more times than not. But then the NBA just stares with apathy at the Bruce Bowen achilles-kick on Amare, a groin-buster on Nash, etc., etc. To me, not handing down suspensions for these infractions is more likely to lead to a brawl. Seriously, did anyone think there wasn't going to be a fight in game 5 or 6? I was shocked when the series ended without another major bust-up. Of course, by that point the Spurs had the series in the bag and didn't provoke anyone else.

I agree with Krystle (hi Krystle!). Why don't you ever talk about Oprah or what was on the View yesterday or about your feelings regarding Melissa?
