Less Rants, More Facts

Hey Everyone,

Sorry about the delay in getting this posted, but studying for the bar is not only taking away my will to live by draining my soul; the time commitment has prevented me from updating this regularly. This week I am opting for a shorter list. Also be prepared, by the end of next week I hope to have the first edition of The Battle of the Brads!!!

Okay I said less rants, not “no rants”… so here we go!

1. I know Tank Johnson deserves more than an eight game suspension, under the NFL's new conduct policy. This furthers Pacman's argument that he was only being made an example of. Again I go back to the fact he was not CONVICTED of anything! Who cares that he went to a strip club the night before? Going to the strip club is not a crime! Do you know what a crime is? Carrying around 6 firearms when you are a felon is a freaking crime!! Tank Johnson was convicted and went to jail, but he only was suspended for 8 games??? I'll take a guy that goes to strip clubs over a felon who carries multiple firearms ANY day! Also I bet you any amount of money his eight games will be reduced to six, and that Pacman's will remain the entire season. It just isn't right. I bet Pacman would go sit in jail right now for sixty days if it meant his suspension would be reduced from 16 to 6. Its like he is being punished for having a good lawyer. Also on a side note, I read that Tank Johnson spent $700 on junk food while in prison for 60 days. Thats just FAT!

2. I know this is not Bill Belichick's last hurrah. There are numerous articles and "insiders" talking about how Belichick is building up for one last hurrah? Why?? I don't get it. He has never indicated this is his last year coaching. Just because his former mentor did that, doesn’t mean he will do the same thing. He is arguably the best coach in the league. Even if New England went 2-14 next season I doubt the Pats would WANT to get rid of him, and numerous teams would dump their current head coaches to sign him. Sure he has made some huge moves lately, but the Patriots are well within the salary cap, and most of the deals he has made are short term. I don't think they are short term, because he has short term goals, I think they are short term because Bill has zero player loyalty, and he wants to dump these players when he is done with them. He has been avoiding "mortgaging" the franchise's future to win now. I argue he has done the opposite, by signing shorter contracts, there are less future cap hits, and he has even added a first rounder to next year's draft. Plus, what does he have after this? Nothing. His three kids are in college, he was recently divorced from his wife, and his mistress is married to another man! There is absolutely nothing to go home to. I doubt he is going to give up coaching the league's perennial powerhouse to go into broadcasting. Belichick is just trying to do what every coach is trying to do. Win a damn Super Bowl.

3. I know this dog-fighting issue will plague Vick all season. Most recent reports indicate that there is sufficient evidence to indict Vick on his illegal dog-fighting ring. I believe that even if found guilty he would not receive jail time, and any jail time he did receive would not be a substantial amount. Best case scenario for Vick is that the Virginia DA would hurry up and decide if he is going to press charges, and if so, sooner is better than later. The sooner they press charges, the sooner Vick can plead out, accept probation, and move on with his life. The longer they drag this out, the greater the chance it will carry into the NFL season. Then Vick will be forced to defend the case while trying to keep his job as the starting QB of the Falcons. Once charges are filed, Vick is entitled to a speedy trial. Not a right he will welcome if charges are filed in August. So Vick could spend the beginning of the 2007-08 season dealing with his legal troubles. Moreover, unlike with Pacman, Goodell will come out and say he will wait for the legal system to run its course, before he makes a decision on Vick (no rationale to explain the hypocrisy in that decision... but watch, it WILL happen). So in November, when Vick finally wraps up his case, Goodell will suspend him for two games. By that time, it will probably be irrelevant, because with the distraction all season long, and the competitive NFC south, the Falcons will probably be out of playoff contention anyways.

4. I know Asante Samuel has every reason to hold out on the Pats. The Patriots have absolutely zero player loyalty. They ask for the world, but then fail to reward you after the fact. They have let good players such as Willie McGinest, Ty law, Deon Branch, David Givens, and Adam Vinatieri go after they contributed to winning multiple Super Bowls. I’d also like to point out they have won a total of ZERO Super Bowls AFTER they let these players go. Asante Samuel had a break out season (10 interceptions and 65 tackles!!!), and was a big part in the Pat's success last season, but for some reason only known to the Pats, they refuse to give Samuel a new contract. For a team that has been forced to start a wide receiver at cornerback, you think they would put a premium on that position. The Patriots party line is that it is just business and nothing personal. Well then Asante, I say HOLD OUT. It’s just business. Why risk an injury on a one year contract. You've earned your big paycheck, now just sit until you get it. I love this sitting until week 10 deal. Wait til week ten, report to the team, get a years credit toward your pension, and also the pro-rated portion of the average of the top five salaries at your position for those last six games (Which at CB will be 7.79 Million). Business is business and there is too much money on the line to be loyal to a team that isn’t loyal to you.

5. I know the San Antonio Spurs will win the NBA championship. The Spurs are hot. They were 23-6 after the all-star break. They continued their great play in the playoffs only losing one game in the Denver and Utah series, and only two games in the Suns series for a playoff record of 12-4. Lebron was unbelievable in overtime win over Detroit scoring 29 of Cleveland’s last 30 points, including ALL their points on BOTH overtime periods. Also the Cavs are 2-0 verse the Spurs this year. However, I don’t think they can pull off the upset. The Cavs would still be proud of themselves if they lost, which they should be, but that takes away some of your hunger. By contrast, the Spurs would consider the season to be a waste if they failed to win the Championship. The Spurs hunger, multiple “go-to” players, and their experience should be enough to prevail over a one man show. I think it will take 5 games for the Spurs to win their 4th NBA Championship in eight years.

There are your facts people. Be sure to leave some comments!

Dave: "I'll take a guy that goes to strip clubs over a felon who carries multiple firearms ANY day!"

Ricardo: Yes, you would. And you would take Tony Gonzalez over both of them.

You're right about Belichick. That guy has nothing but United States Hands Football. It's a sad time to be a coach in this league right now. You have to be a curmudgeoned, addicted loner. If he quits, he needs to be put on suicide watch.

I also agree (wow) with you on Samuel. The Pats keep saying that it's about business and about the team, yet the owner is making a killing and I'm sure the coach's salary is very nice. If the money's coming in, there's no reason why everyone shouldn't get their fair share.

You are crazy! Why are you all over Pacman's nutsack? He is a natural born criminal who will find his place as a statistic of the legal system sooner of later, unless he drops his loyalty to his bad influence friends. Tank is a big fella, so I doubt $700 worth of junk food is far fetched; hell I would have spent that if not more... Again I reiterate: Fuck the Patriots. They are going to have a good season with one of the sloppiest looking coaches in the league but that's neither here not there. Just fuck 'em. I hope Asante hold out pulls a fat paycheck and gets a sweet contract with the Falcons. Vick is in no danger of losing his starting role in Atlanta. He has been working harder this year than ever before on working out and watching film to improve his play. He will have the ability to call his plays at the line of scrimmage now, which will be a first for him and which excites him. I hope he can adapt to it as well as he thinks he can but you never can tell these things until they happen. And as for the Spurs, fuck them too. They had cheap wins over the Suns in their series (they should have lost in 6 games to the Suns). Fucking bitch ass Robert Horry, I hope he develops a serious case of syphilis. If the Pistons were in the finals, they would have dominated the Spurs, so what do you think the Cavs will do to them? That's right, Cavs in 5 games over the overhyped Spurs. In conclusion, Fuck the Patriots and the Spurs and good luck with the bar exam bro.

Wow, its no secret we are studying criminal law and procedure this week huh?

Lets try not to let bar review infiltrate this blog!!

Finally...someone who can write an entertaining blog.

1. I really don't care about Tank Johnson. I think just having the name "Tank" should require him to serve time.

2. I'm not sure how long Belichick will last. He's becoming the NFL's Phil Jackson. He had his hey-day, but doesn't seem to know when to pack it in. To his credit, he does have a top-notch team, whereas Jackson has Kobe and...Kobe's ego and Luke Walton.

3. I already said my piece on Vick, but now that I've reflected, I'd actually like to see him play some games this year just so the D-line can bark at him while he's trying to call an audible...or so PETA can sneak in a pair of pit-bulls to a game and release them onto the field so everyone can watch Vick turn a hopeless option play into a 40-yard-line dog-fighting ring with the Falcon faithful.

4. I'm with you on Asante holding out for a while. With all that cap room and his talent he deserves (by deservers I mean doesn't deserve, but considering he's a good NFL player...deserves) a payday. Dragging it into the season may hurt his stock, but the Pats will settle it before then.

5. I hear you Tony. Nothing makes me throw up into my mouth quicker than the thought of Robert Horry in any NBA playoff game...except for $700 in junk food that is. The Spurs got an easy pass by the Suns and didn't deserve it. We talked about this, but it was basically the result of the NBA not understanding why rules exist. Regardless, the Spurs are probably still the best 7-game series team this year. As nice as it is to see a little life in the East, there will be no stopping the Spurs. I call a sweep.

Lawyers are the absolute and consummate epitome of what is wrong with the world. They are completely concerned about doing what’s best for them and how to fill their coffers, which of course requires them to have no regard for others, or most importantly, what’s right. They routinely defend people of heinous crimes that they know they committed, they sue anyone and everyone for a crime except the people responsible (I’m looking right at you, lawyer for Josh Hancock’s dad) and it is this perverse, disconcerting, and sickening mentality that continues in this blog. So many of your opinions are stained and sullied by the odious and reprehensible taint of your “schooling” in the “legal system”. How many times have known criminals been released back into society on technicalities, whether it’s an arresting officer not filling out a form, or finding the murder weapon complete with suspect’s prints but without a warrant, or any number of the unmitigated tragedies that litter the headlines and screen tickers of our newspapers and 24 news networks? Who is responsible for this abhorrent abortion of justice? Lawyers…specifically David. With such an insidious mind and warped view, it is impossible for him to accurately, and justly, report on the major topics in the NFL. May God have mercy on your soul.

Conclusion – man, your view on Vick and Pac-man is way fucked up.

David said...

First off Brad, what is the point of this rant about lawyers, and America’s legal system? This is a blog about football… get with the program. Second, no one is impressed with your vocabulary. There is no reason to try to sound smart by using words such as “consummate epitome,” “reprehensible taint,” and “unmitigated tragedies.” Third the American Legal System is one of the things that make America great. Our founding fathers (who are far more intelligent than you or me) implemented an adversarial system which entitles every person to their day in court. “Routinely defending people of heinous crimes that they know they committed,” comes with the territory. If everyone was not entitled to a defense, then how do you decide who gets to present a defense and who doesn’t? Moreover, these “technicalities” and “warrants” you refer to are there to protect innocent people from governmental abuses of power. If the government’s conduct was not punished, then what incentive would they have to respect our rights? I am of the belief that it is better for TEN guilty men to go free, than ONE innocent man be sent to prison, and if you do not agree with that, let’s see if you change your mind when you are that ONE innocent man. Furthermore, I assure you that very few criminal defense lawyers are filling their “coffers.” And as far as the civil attorneys doing so, they deserve every penny. If Josh Hancock’s Dad’s Attorney is suing someone for a “crime” then they obviously did something wrong. Additionally, that lawsuit might have merit. There are laws stating that restaurants should stop serving intoxicated patrons for a reason. Moreover there are laws saying you should not stop your tow truck in the fast lane without hazard lights on for twenty minutes for a reason. I’m not saying Josh Hancock is not partly to blame, but in my opinion his fault is less than half, and at the very least he deserves a case to determine who was at fault.

If you don’t like our system, then move to China or Cuba or any other country that tries to effectuate justice by arbitrary decisions by the government without any procedures or protections in place for their citizens.

So in conclusion Brad, I whole-heartedly disagree with you. Lawyers are not what is wrong with the world. If anyone is to blame it’s the uneducated, unmotivated, lemmings that go through every single day not doing anything to make the world better, just wasting air, and complaining all the time.

Brad said...

The justified and air tight attack on lawyers was merely meant to show how your Dark Side training had skewed you perception of the NFL….essentially in this case your vomit-inducing defense of thug-gangsta Pac-Man. As lawyers do all the time, I attacked the credibility of the person, not the actual pertinent point.

And if you think for one second, in all seriousness (unlike most of my well written jocular “attack”) that the Hancock family lawsuit has ANY merit, then you seriously have lost respect in my eyes. How fucking irresponsible. Hancock’s fault is “less than half”?! So….him getting drunk, getting cut off by the staff, refusing a free cab ride, lying to the staff about walking home, getting behind the wheel of a car and driving drunk and recklessly, smoking pot while driving, and hitting a tow truck doing it’s job is less than half?! Either you knew nothing of the facts of the case, or you have no sense of morality. Why stop there? Sue the government for building the road, because if they weren’t there he couldn’t be an asshole drunk driver on them, risking the lives of everyone else on the road. Sue the company who made the car of the innocent mad who broke down, because if their car didn’t break down, he wouldn’t have needed the tow truck that he drunkenly smashed into. Sue the Cardinals for signing him to contract, because if they hadn’t he would never have been in St. Louis that night. Seriously, the only person to blame is Josh Hancock, and you know it. His fault is less than half?! Fuck you. It’s personal accountability. He was a grown man who made several horrific choices, and got killed doing so. The fact of the matter is that his family refuses to believe that their drunk driving, pot smoking son killed himself, by his actions alone, and instead of trying to profit from his death, the should be thanking God that their irresponsible kid didn’t hurt anyone else.

Wow, this is a lot of fun...though maybe Dave should remove the "NFL" from the blog title.

My two-cents on Brad's legal rant are this: lawyers (and law students) get a bad wrap. Many deserve it--surely there are loads of Johnny Cochrans out there--but Dave is right. The system has problems, but it's not until you understand them and consider the alternatives that you realize the true worth. Lawyers work very, very hard and generally are very smart. For every person who makes some smart-ass, unclever comment about lawyers when they find out I'm in law school, I think that they must not know a lawyer. If our society weren't so confrontation-averse and if we didn't care about justice (economic, social, etc.), then there would be fewer lawyers.

But Brad may be onto something with this nexus of NFL analysis and legal training. Sports are a major exception to an otherwise rigid legal system. Think about fighting in hockey and all the other off-the-field shenanigans players pull. Real-world, legal process and punishment often doesn't seem to apply--as if the entertainment aspect of sports justifies a wealth of behavior that we otherwise find reprehensible.

This is why I laugh at the punishments given to hockey players who intentionally slash someone in the face, basketball players whose immaturity spills into the stands in a childish brawl, Italian soccer clubs whose involvement in match-fixing is judged somewhat harshly only to be reduced to a mere slap on the wrist, and football players committing felonies. It's disgusting, but it's sports.

Yea, I agree with Krystle, Victor is a jerk! He's mean to his dog Dunga and has never taken him to the vet.

Ricardo said...

As far as lawyer rant goes, I'm with Corey. The problem lies on both sides and it comes down to human nature. It's hard to be successful in our legal system and our capitalist society without being very selfish and greedy. It's what the damn thing is based on... but it is the best system that anyone has come up with so far.

That doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to be as selfless and unbiased as possible, however.

David said...

Hey Everyone,

Any topics that you want "The Brads" to debate about? I'm compiling a list now.

Brad said...

Here's a topic: The worth of attorneys

bgolden said...

First I would like to kindly request a dismissal from this Battle of the Brads, as Bradley D seems a little too angry right now, and I live a little too close to him. His disdaining disapprobation, (as he might call it), for lawyers could all too easily spill over to other honorable servants of American society.. nah. Just kidding. It'll be fun to rile Brad up. What got into him though, huh? Sheesh!

About the topics:

1) You know I've got something to say about Tank. All kidding aside on this topic, both Dave and BraDney--By the way, this is how I will refer to Brad Denny from now on. When I type Brad, I don't want people to think I'm speaking in the 3rd person. You know, 'cause Bradly, jus' bein' Bradly.. Anyway, both Dave and BraDney made good points on the Tank issue. It is not fair that Pacman's suspension is longer than Tanks (point to Dave). When Goodell set the season-long precedent with Pacman, those players who were actually convicted of crimes should have received punishments that were of equal or greater value. That being said, Pacman definitely deserved to be suspended (point to BraDney). The argument that Dave provided is way off. Tank deserved to be punished for breaking the law. But why is it worse to have a fetish for firearms, than to be a perpetual public nuisance?! Again, it doesn't matter that Pacman didn't break the law. He's not in jail. That is the punishment for breaking the law. What he did was piss off his employer, and as far as I know, most employers would straight up fire your ass for constantly getting into legal trouble, "guilty", or not. Maybe the lengths of their suspensions should be swapped, but Pacman deserved more than a lecture, or anger management, or whatever other weanie crap they throw at these pampered thug athletes. One more point in defense of Tank: if he does happen to get a 6-game reduced suspension, that is fair. The team already had suspended him, and, AGAIN, it's not like anybody died because Tank likes big guns in his closet.. can Pacman say that nobody has died because of his hooliganism?

2) I apparently know much less about BB's personal life than the rest of you, so I'll just say that he's an awesome coach. I've witnessed his brilliant game-planning enough to see that. Not only game prep, but halftime and in-game adjustments. He's brilliant. The loyalty thing will catch up with the team, however. As long as they're winning, they will have just enough glue to hold it together. There are enough players who value winning over fat $, to make that true, I believe. But as soon as the bolts start loosening on those New England wheels, those babies are gonna come flying off fast... so there is apparently glue and bolts involved. Ought to be enough to win a Super Bowl this year. Dave, 2-14 with this season's expectations will give any coach a hard look.. even if you were just trying to make a point.

3) I truly hope that if this whole dog-fighting thing shakes out to be true, that Vick will lose all respect from his NFL peers (sans Clinton Portis). If that is true, his own O-line will bark at him, and part willingly to allow defenses to swallow him whole. He's elusive, but not that elusive.

4) Asante Samuel is good. The Pats are cheap. He will hold out and watch the team win without him, because the other Pats are good enough to. He will... ah hell. You know what? I don't care. These contract issues are getting so old to me. Especially since the whole Lance Briggs thing. There's never enough $ for these guys.

5) The Spurs will win. Snore. Hey, if the Spurs win a championship, but nobody's there to see it, do they really win?

A couple of closers:

Big respect to Corey for acknowledging the flaw of the legal system when it comes to high-profile athletes. Unlike BraDney, I believe that our judicial system is the finest in the world, if flawed. Everything has flaws. Our democracy in general, certainly among the world's finest, is flawed. But it's not fair for a minority of bad apples practicing law to be the face of the entire profession.

Lastly, I must respond to bebo's slam of me as a "soccer naysayer". I was clearly trying to push some buttons with my statements about soccer, and your response was perfect. So angry, defensive, and elitist even! Thank you! My honest and true thoughts on soccer?.. Clearly it should be named football. United States Hands Football is funny, because it's appropriate. I have had some exposure to soccer. I was in Germany when they won the cup in.. '88? They were fanatical. I got to see very talented players practice in person, and they were amazing. However, as much as I love sports, I don't have time to watch everything. Soccer takes a back seat because I don't have 2 hours to spend on a lesser sport. Yes, lesser. Not lesser because its foreign, or un-American. Lesser because it's less exciting. I find it difficult to get too excited about a sport that you can turn off if one team is up by 2 goals.
Comparison:

NFL: The offense is on the opponents 2-yard line. They're already up by 3 and are looking to put the nail in the coffin. They conservatively run the ball and.. BLAM!! The half-back gets blasted, loses the ball and the defense returns it 98 yards for a TD! The whole game has changed out of nowhere!

Soccer: The team controlling the ball is up by 2 goals and are threatening again. But a misdirected pass leads to a turnover and the opponent somehow finds favorable numbers and are coming back down the field quickly. A sweet feed.. GOAL!.. Great. They still lose by a goal.

As for the rest of your libel, I find it funny that you would think of me as an ignorant, prideful American. Leaning liberal, I rarely get accused of being too patriotic, even if I do love this country. It's also funny that you think that I may feel threatened by soccer. Perhaps in reference to my international basketball comments. I don't feel threatened by soccer. As for the snobby comments about, what I assume are meant to be some weird stereotypes of ignorant, low-class, non-soccer loving Americans.. I don't know what Natural Light is; I don't prefer Denny's but am not too good for it,; I have bought framed photos and posterized paintings from the mall, and feel none the lesser for it, thank you; Nobody wants to "date" the Pam Andersons of the world, they want to fuck them. And I won’t deny that I was one of the millions who would’ve dicked the Canadian right out of her back in her prime years. If you are somehow insinuating that your boner is somehow more sophisticated than mine because of that... well that's weird. And I think I resent it. bebo.

Corey said...

I don't think anyone has ever called Bebo an "elitist." At the same time, there isn't any other bigger compliment you could've paid the guy. I just know that put a big smile on his face and that he went and told everyone he knew, "Hey everyone, I'm an elitist! I made it!"

David said...

Looks like Don Banks (Sports Illustrated NFL Journalist) was reading my blog... Here is a quote he had in his own article on Friday... two days after my posting!

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/don_banks/06/08/snaps/1.html

"Even if the now-federal-level investigation into a possible dog-fighting ring doesn't wind up affecting Michael Vick's on-field status this season in any way, due to the length of the ensuing legal process should charges be forthcoming, I'm of the belief that Vick won't be able to completely block this story out of his mind and focus on his quarterbacking alone."

Ricardo said...

Hohohoho. That was hella funny.

Some comments / clarifications:

It doesn’t bother me if someone doesn’t appreciate soccer. Just like it doesn’t bother me that people eat crappy food or drink crappy beer. People can do whatever they want and God bless ‘em.

What does bother me is when people go out of their way to say ignorant crap about how soccer is terrible and ‘the whole world is wrong but us’ based on their own irrelevant issues.

Here’s a good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nASM67FBh5E

It reminds me of the whole anti-French thing. And it reminds me of this guy:
http://z.about.com/d/politicalhumor/1/0/n/U/moran.jpg

If the shoe fits, wear it. If not, then I’m not talking about you.

As far as your comment goes about soccer games being less exciting:

One of the reasons that soccer is harder to appreciate than other sports is that (unlike most sports nowadays) its attraction is a lot less based on scoring. It’s the whole event in its entirety: the flow, the movements, the changes in tempo, the adjustments, the tactics, the personal battles, the mistakes, the infinite possibilities of twenty-two players, no position restrictions, a round ball, and no time-outs.

If you don’t see that then yes, it is hard to wait around for someone to do a bicycle kick. It’s like going to a symphony only to hear the gong. It’s not just the gong, homie. It’s the whole thing.

By the way, in soccer a 2-0 lead is referred to as the most dangerous score. I can’t tell you how many times teams come back from being two goals down. Here are a couple of the most exciting, recent comebacks:

By the way, to clarify a little more: My distaste of the aforementioned behavior is universal and not centered around a particular region, culture, or even sport. My examples may seem to imply otherwise, but I picked them due to their peceived familiarity to the contributors of this blog.

English football fans piss me off in the same way. Of the few places I've had the pleasure to visit, they're the most closed to other nations' sports. The BBC's football site (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/default.stm) is one of the worst places to find information on leagues or competitions outside of Britain.

Fazed.net has a football discussion board run by Brits. Discussions breakdown as follows: 95% Premiere League, 3% England Nat'l Team, 1% MLS, and my occasional, and completely ignored "CHIVAS RULE!" post.

So in conclusion:
Be free to love what you want, but don't crap on other stuff until you've given it a fair chance and understand the shortcomings of your sport/beer/women/decorations/food of choice.

I don't care what you say, among any parameters I can think of (except maybe price per pound of swill-grade matter) Taco Bell and Denny's are crap. And I know. I used to eat and work there.

OK....two things before I annihilate Golden in the Battle.
One - Damn you wanna-be lawyers. As you types tend to do, you took things too literally and missed the point of my "rant". The whole "letter of the law" over the "spirit of the law" that screwed both the Phoenix Suns and society as a whole. Granted, 90% of lawyers are the scum of the Earth (an indisputible point), but I was only ripping on Dave and his credibility for his EXTREMELY flawed view on the legal situations/punishments of Pac-Man/Tank etc.
Two - granted, the WC '06 enlightened me a bit on soccer, but let's keep this on real football.
